This is not what I expected

Woman sitting at a desk with a laptop and notebook, thinking while managing tasks

Early on in my virtual assistant business, I had a very different picture in my head of what I’d be doing.

I thought it would look more like traditional office work.

Filing, ordering supplies, and basic data entry. Simple, behind-the-scenes tasks that just needed to get done.

And to be fair, there are still pieces of that.

But over time, the role grew into something more than I expected.

Here are a few things I didn’t expect to be doing on a regular basis:

  • Resizing graphics ten times just to get them to fit each platform
  • Turning a few quick notes into a blog, a caption, or an email
  • Catching small things like broken links before anyone else sees them
  • Learning new tools as I go because something always comes up
  • Going from one kind of task to a completely different one in the same hour

And sometimes, it looks like sitting down and scheduling as many posts as a platform will allow, just to keep things consistent and running smoothly.

If you’re running your own business, you’ve probably felt some of this on your end, too.

All the little things that need to get done. The details that aren’t complicated but still take time and attention.

And if no one is handling them, they tend to pile up quietly in the background.

And one thing I didn’t expect at all…

How much of this work is about thinking.

Not just doing tasks, but paying attention, noticing details, and helping things run smoothly behind the scenes.

Most of it isn’t flashy. It’s the kind of work that keeps everything moving… or slowly starts to feel overwhelming when it’s left undone.

I’ve honestly come to really appreciate that part of it.

Because even though it’s not what I originally pictured, it feels more meaningful than I expected.

And for a lot of business owners, those small behind-the-scenes tasks are exactly what start to feel like too much over time.

That’s usually where having the right support can make all the difference.

If you’ve been feeling that too, trying to keep up with all the little details while also running your business, I’d be happy to help.

Whether it’s content, emails, or the day-to-day pieces that keep everything moving, that’s exactly what I do.
