How Big Scary Ants Became My Business Mentors (Then Got Terro’d)

We recently moved to a very rural part of North Florida, surrounded by thick woods on all sides.

Until a few months ago, our entire property was untouched forest, and it’s been amazing (and sometimes wild) watching nature up close.

One thing we noticed right away: the bugs up here are bigger than anything we saw back in South Florida.

After a few days of heavy rain, we had our first real encounter with some of these creatures inside the house.

Most noticeably—ants. Big ants!

At first, I was grossed out (who wouldn’t be?), but then I couldn’t help but sit and watch them for a moment.

The way they moved together, stayed focused, communicated silently, and worked non-stop. It was oddly inspiring.

That’s when it hit me: ants are a lot like small business owners and virtual assistants.

Think about it:

  • They’re resilient. Whether rain or obstacle, they keep going.
  • They’re organized. Every ant has a role, and they follow systems that just work.
  • They don’t give up. If they hit a wall, they find another path.
  • They work together. It’s not about ego—it’s about getting the job done.

If you run a small business, this probably sounds familiar.

You’re building from the ground up, handling everything from strategy to cleanup. You keep going, even when it’s messy or overwhelming. You’re juggling a million things—and still finding a way to make it work.

There’s nothing glamorous about running a business, but it’s what builds strong foundations.

Small business owners put in the work to build their dreams—and that same dedication is what I bring to my role as a virtual assistant.

Now, if small business owners are like the “queen ants,” then I think of virtual assistants as the worker ants—keeping things running in the background so you can focus on leading the way.

We are managing the behind-the-scenes grind:

  • 1. Formatting newsletters so they’re ready to send out.
  • 2. Scheduling social media posts to keep your online presence consistent.
  • 3. Organizing tasks so that nothing falls through the cracks.

It’s not flashy work, but it matters. And when it’s done right, it makes everything run smoother.

I’m that helping hand that lets business owners focus on their area of expertise while I take care of the moving parts.

Of course, despite all the admiration for the ants, we ultimately bought Terro ant traps because who wants ants in their kitchen?

But watching those ants work reminded me of the beauty of persistence, purpose, and partnership—values I bring to every client I support.

It also reminded of this well-known passage of scripture about ants:

Proverbs 6:6-8: “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.”

I want to be like the ant!

If you’re a small business owner looking for someone as hardworking (but way less invasive) than an ant —I’d love to help.
