Trello: The Digital Upgrade Your To-Do List Needs

“I love a good legal pad, but sometimes even the pad can’t keep up with my to-do list. Enter Trello: my to-do list’s cool, tech-savvy cousin who actually gets things done.”

“My daily legal pad list is great… until I lose it under a stack of papers. With Trello, I never wonder if my tasks fell behind the desk again.”

“Every morning, I write my to-do list on a trusty legal pad. It’s satisfying…until the list starts looking like an endless scroll of doom. That’s when Trello saves the day – and my sanity.”

I couldn’t decide which introduction to start with, so I included all three! Ha!

In case you missed it, Trello is December’s Feature of the Month!

The truth is, I DO still use a legal pad to write down my to-do list every morning which is probably prehistoric of me, but I think I’m just an old-school person who prefers paper and filing cabinets to project management software and Dropbox.

Don’t judge me – I’m getting there, I’m just taking a little longer than everyone else.

While I do use Trello, I’ve had a hard time getting used to it, but only because I hadn’t taken the time to learn it well.

To write this feature of the month, I had to force myself to do the research, and here is what I found.

Trello’s pretty awesome!

What is Trello?

Trello is a project management tool that helps you organize tasks and workflows visually. It uses a Kanban-style board system (don’t worry, I’ll explain):

  • Boards: Represent your projects or categories.
  • Lists: Break down stages of work (like To Do, Doing, Done).
  • Cards: Represent individual tasks or items.

Trello isn’t just for “to-do lists”—it can also help with brainstorming, organizing testimonials, arranging resources, and tracking achievements. It’s flexible and can do whatever you need.

Why Trello is Worth It

Here’s why I’m warming up to this tool:

  1. Easy to Use: Drag-and-drop for simplicity. Perfect for beginners like me.
  2. Customizable: Tailor it to your unique workflow with labels, checklists, and deadlines.
  3. Collaboration Available: Assign tasks, share files, and leave comments—it’s all in one place.
  4. Integrates with Everything: Google Drive, Slack, Microsoft Teams, and more.
  5. Accessible Anytime: Available on desktop, mobile, and offline (because Wi-Fi isn’t always your friend).
  6. Automation: Trello’s “Butler” – an automation tool within the program can handle repetitive tasks for you.
  7. Affordable: From a generous free plan to premium options for growing teams.

Plan Breakdown

  • Free: Great for individuals or small teams, with unlimited cards, lists, and members.
  • Standard ($5/user/month): Adds advanced checklists, custom fields, and more.
  • Premium ($10/user/month): Includes a timeline, calendar views, and admin controls.
  • Enterprise ($17.50/user/month for 25+ users): Ideal for large organizations with enhanced features.

I heard someone say, “Start simple and grow as you go,” because that’s what it helps you do.

After exploring its features, I’m genuinely excited to incorporate it into my work. And yes, the legal pad will still stick around for a little while until I get used to it.
